Verification & Model Limits

Verify primary records, apply tools in the right currency and tax context, and understand model limits before acting.

Official lookup tools

Verify the firm, professional, filing, or fund before relying on the claim.

Use official records when the decision depends on registration, disciplinary history, company filings, or fund costs. These tools support due diligence; they do not replace reading the relevant account or product documents.

Broker or brokerage firm

Check registration and background information for brokers and brokerage firms.

Investment adviser

Review adviser registration information, Form ADV, relationship summaries, and disclosures.

Public-company filings

Search company filings and full-text EDGAR records before relying on secondary summaries.

SEC EDGAR ↗

Fund costs and structure

Compare fund expenses and analyze how costs can affect an investment scenario.

Rules, interfaces, and available data can change; verify current information against the official tools before acting.

International investor application

Use calculators in the currency and tax context of the actual decision

A calculator can produce mathematically correct output and still be unsuitable for a cross-border decision if the inputs ignore FX, local taxes, withholding, fees, or timing. Treat every output as a scenario based on assumptions rather than a prediction or a personalized recommendation.

For currency scenarios

Separate the investment return from the currency translation. If the asset return is measured in USD but the goal is measured in another currency, model both an appreciating and a depreciating dollar. Include realistic conversion spreads and transfer fees when those costs are material.

For tax-oriented examples

Do not use a generic withholding percentage as a substitute for tax analysis. The applicable result can depend on investor status, income type, source, documentation, treaty eligibility, product structure, and home-country rules. Any tax-oriented calculator on this site is educational and should direct the user to current official sources.

For time and settlement tools

Distinguish exchange hours, settlement days, broker processing times, and bank transfer times. A market-time converter should account for daylight-saving changes; a settlement example should identify business days and applicable market holidays.

before the investor rely on an output

Every calculator is an assumption engine

Outputs depend on inputs, simplifications, rounding, and model design. They are not forecasts, tax determinations, valuations, or recommendations. Review the full Calculators, Models & Educational Tools disclosure ›

VERIFICATION SEQUENCE

Verify identity, authority, instrument, and primary record in that order

Official lookup tools are not extra reading. They answer a concrete evidence question when a claim, professional, product, or company needs to be checked.

  1. Identity: confirm the exact firm, professional, issuer, fund, or security name rather than relying on a social profile or copied logo.
  2. Authority: check the relevant registration or professional record and understand what that status does and does not mean.
  3. Instrument: confirm ticker, share class, CUSIP or fund/share-class details where relevant so the research matches the security.
  4. Primary record: use EDGAR, a prospectus, official filing, account statement, plan document, or regulator record to verify the claim.
  5. Timestamp: record when the information was checked because registrations, filings, prices, and rules can change.

Use external tools only for actions that cannot be completed inside the Learning Center

Official lookup tools have a different job from educational articles. Registration lookups can confirm whether a brokerage firm, broker, or investment adviser appears in an official system; EDGAR can retrieve company filings; a fund analyzer can compare product data and costs. These are actions, not substitutes for the concepts taught here.

Before relying on a lookup, match the exact legal name, registration number, ticker, or filing entity. A search result that “looks right” is not enough when several firms or securities have similar names.

  • Use official lookup tools for registration and primary filings.
  • Match exact identifiers before drawing a conclusion.
  • Return to the internal learning pages to interpret what the retrieved record means.
