1. Inputs control outputs
Every calculator is an assumption engine. A result can change materially when the user changes return, inflation, tax, FX, contribution, withdrawal, volatility, time horizon, or fee assumptions. A precise-looking number is not evidence that the assumptions are correct.
Use a range of plausible inputs and record the assumptions that matter most. When an output is highly sensitive to one assumption, treat that assumption as a decision risk rather than hiding it inside a single estimate.
2. Models simplify reality
Educational models can omit taxes, transaction costs, bid/ask spreads, slippage, cash drag, contribution timing, sequence risk, liquidity constraints, behavioral changes, product restrictions, currency conversion, and market discontinuities. Simplification is useful for learning but can make a model unsuitable for execution.
Do not interpret a model as a complete financial plan, tax calculation, portfolio recommendation, or forecast of a specific security.
3. Rounding and implementation differences
Displayed values can be rounded, annualized, compounded, or converted using conventions that differ from a broker, bank, tax form, or product prospectus. Day-count conventions, contribution timing, compounding frequency, payment dates, and exchange rates can also produce different results.
When a real transaction depends on precision, use the official institution's calculation and documentation rather than an educational estimate.
4. Hypothetical results are not performance
A scenario, projection, backtest, or illustrative return does not represent an actual account and cannot reproduce the effect of live execution, taxes, liquidity, market impact, changing spreads, emotional decisions, or future market conditions. Good historical fit can result from hindsight or overfitting.
Past and hypothetical results should be used to understand sensitivity and decision logic, not to promise or imply a future return.
5. Tax-oriented tools are educational only
A generic withholding or tax example cannot determine an investor's tax result. Status, income source, product structure, treaty eligibility, documentation, residence, entity type, deductions, elections, and home-country rules can all matter.
Tax-oriented outputs should be treated as examples to help formulate questions for current official sources or a qualified tax professional.
6. Market and FX inputs can be stale, delayed, or indicative
If a calculator uses a market price, yield, index value, or exchange rate, the input can be delayed or indicative and can move before the user acts. A currency conversion estimate can also exclude the bank or broker's spread, fee, minimum charge, or settlement timing.
Verify live executable information through the relevant provider before a transaction.
7. Do not make a decision from one output
Use calculators as one part of a broader process that includes product documents, risk analysis, liquidity, taxes, legal eligibility, diversification, time horizon, and the user's financial circumstances. If two reasonable assumptions produce very different decisions, the uncertainty itself is important information.
For material financial, legal, tax, or retirement decisions, obtain advice appropriate to the user's actual circumstances where needed.
