Risk metrics are useful only after the underlying failure modes are named. A complete risk map starts with how money can be lost or access can be impaired, then chooses measurements that illuminate those specific mechanisms.

Count common risk drivers, not only the number of positions

A portfolio can hold dozens of securities and still be concentrated if they depend on the same factor, sector, customer, funding source, currency, commodity, duration exposure, or macro regime. ETF overlap can also create hidden concentration when several funds own the same large companies.

Risk metrics answer different questions

Risk metrics measure different dimensions and should not be collapsed into one score. Volatility measures variation, beta measures sensitivity to a benchmark, correlation measures co-movement, maximum drawdown measures peak-to-trough loss, Value at Risk estimates a loss threshold under a model and confidence level, and Expected Shortfall focuses on the average of model losses beyond a chosen threshold. None describes every path by which capital can be lost.

Use a metric only when the decision matches the metric. A long-horizon investor may care more about permanent impairment and drawdown than daily volatility; a leveraged strategy may care about short-horizon gap and margin risk; an illiquid portfolio needs a liquidity stress even if measured volatility appears low.

Drawdown is the lived experience of risk

Drawdown measures the decline from a prior portfolio peak to a subsequent trough. It matters because recovering from a loss requires a larger percentage gain than the loss itself: a 50% decline requires a 100% gain to return to the starting value. Evaluate drawdown together with liquidity needs, leverage, concentration, and the investor’s ability to remain invested.

Measure the risk the portfolio actually has
